This is not archival per se, but the Preservation dep't at Cornell has
done quite interesting work scanning brittle books and then making them
digitally available as slow Quicktime "movies."  No reason archival
materials couldn't be handled the same way.  I think the court is still
out on the long-term durability, and possibly cost benefits, however.
