This workshop/conference is one of the first of its kind in the US to cover
conservation issues that need to be addressed before, during and after new
construction and/or renovation of cultural institutions with collections.
Aspects of the complex design and construction process that directly affect
collections will be discussed and evaluated including the design process;
building placement; site drainage; landscaping materials; loading docks and
collection movement; freight elevators; storage vaults; construction
materials and off gassing; vapor barriers; HVAC system upgrades and
replacement; natural and artificial light levels; window coatings and
coverings; traffic patterns and crowd control; security issues during
construction; renovating a historic building vs. building a new structure;
checks and balances systems and much more. Outside experts will also
discuss specialty issues including HVAC systems, security, insurance, and
etc.
