Alexandra, I agree with you, especially about the funding.

I graduated from a graduate museum studies program about a year ago and I
found that one of the hardest aspects as students and a new professional is
to attend conferences, not only to learn but to meet other professionals. I
was lucky enough that the graduate program I attended had a small
association, the Museum Studies Students Association, which provided
volunteer opportunities, special speakers and other museum related
activities. Also, the Museum Studies program had a scholarship set up to
attend the statewide annual conference, Texas Association of Museums.

A larger association here in the U.S., the Mount Plains Museum Association,
actually offers an "Emerging Leaders" scholarships to their annual
conference. This scholarship is designed for undergraduate/graduate students
"considering a museum career" and paid/unpaid professionals who have been in
the field for less than 3 years. I don't know if any other organizations
provide scholarships. However, if more associations and organizations did
create these type of scholarships, I think we'd see an increase in the
productivity and development of up-and-coming new professionals.

What would it take to create such scholarships? I definitely think it's
important to encourage new professionals to attend conferences and get
involved in the museum community, but this is certainly a project that's out
of my league.

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] A proposal to create ICOM youth groups.

I am a graduate student in anthropology and museum
studies in Milwaukee and would simply love to be an
active part of such a group. Being an aspiring museum
professional in today's world is so exciting, what
with the new definition of museums, the new degree of
professionalism, and new levels of cultural
sensitivity and indigenous incentive in the museum
world. As a graduate student devoted to combining her
academic interests with a museum environment, and as
someone who grew up in another country (Germany) and
is always searching for ways to broaden her museum
experiences and involvement on an international level,
being an active part of such a group would be
extremely beneficial to me.

One main motive of an ICOM youth group should be to
inform grad students of museum conferences going on
nationally and internationally and to help find ways
to gain funding so more students can attend and be
active in these conferences that are SO integral at
this early stage in our careers. I'm not sure I'd use
the term "youth" in the name, however. I would prefer
"young professionals" or "students".

Whoever wants to take on this project, please keep me
informed and let me know how I can be involved.

Sincerely,
Alexandra Trumbull
