I work at a museum that does not provide mobile phones, phone plans, or any kind of reimbursment for mobile phone use. I knew this when I accepted the job. Some members of staff opt to use their personal smartphones for museum-related work like checking email, and some don't. Since that kind of use is optional and our policies are clear, there have been no complaints that I know of.
I have some work that really requires a phone to do (like working with QR codes), but that kind of thing hasn't really been required in the past. However, I now have at least one museum-requested project that really requires a smartphone - namely, managing a mobile-friendly website. There's no reliable way to check my mobile pages without my phone that I'm aware of.
Has anyone dealt w/ this issue at their museums? I can think of solutions to the problem, but none that I'd really push for...e.g., I don't really want a second, "work" phone.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this issue,
Brett
