Re: Information on Assistance to Museums from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA)

With Hurricane Floyd headed for the southeastern U.S., we wanted those of
you located in threatened states to be aware that in the event of disaster
your museum may be eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA).

While public museums have long been eligible for federal disaster recovery
assistance, Congress recently added private nonprofit museums as eligible
facilities. In addition, AAM over the past year worked to broaden the scope
of eligible collections and objects beyond "art objects" to include other
collections and objects of exceptionally significant cultural value and to
include objects beyond those "on display." These policies were formally
revised and implemented only last month.

For more information, FEMA's relevant policies entitled *Collections and
Individual Objects* and *Private Nonprofit Museum Eligibility* are posted on
the agency's website at www.fema.gov/r-n-r/hppolicy.htm.

Please contact us if you have any questions at (202) 289-9125. Our best
thoughts are with you.
