Re: Senate Efforts to Increase Funding for IMLS, NEA, and NEH
        CONTACTS NEEDED ASAP!

In a surprising move, the U.S. Senate tomorrow (July 27) is expected to
begin considering the FY 2000 Interior Appropriations bill (S. 1292), which
includes funding for the federal cultural agencies. During Senate floor
debate on the bill, we expect Senators Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and
Jack Reed (D-RI) to offer an amendment which would increase the budgets of
the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Endowment
for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). At
this time, it's uncertain how much the amendment would increase their
funding levels. In addition, Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) may make efforts
to increase the NEH only.

Please contact your Senators ASAP and urge them to support efforts to
increase funding for ALL THREE cultural agencies (IMLS, NEA, and NEH) during
consideration of the Interior Appropriations bill (S. 1292). As always,
stress how funding from these agencies has helped you to serve your
community. You can contact your Senators by calling the U.S. Capitol
Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Finally, please share your correspondence
and any feedback you get with us. Thank you!

Please contact us if you have any questions at (202) 289-9125.
