Curatorial Internship: Historical Prints Documentation Internship (temporary position)

Introduction
The Historic Preservation and Collections Department at George Washington's Mount Vernon is currently accepting applications for a Curatorial Internship focused on documentation of historical prints. As part of Mount Vernon's ongoing efforts to improve access to its significant collections of fine and decorative arts, this internship will provide experience with professional procedures for documenting museum holdings, including object examination, description, condition assessment, cataloging, object research, digitization, data entry into an online cataloging system (TMS), and management of museum object information and research files. The intern will work under the immediate supervision of the Associate Curator, and in collaboration with subject specialists and curatorial, collections management, conservation, and library staff as required.

Mount Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington, is located in Mount Vernon, Virginia, 16 miles south of Washington, DC. Acquired by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association since 1860, Mount Vernon is widely recognized as having initiated the historic preservation movement in America, and it is today the most visited historic home in the nation, welcoming over one million visitors annually. The current historic site encompasses George Washington's original Mansion House Farm and consists of 500 acres; in addition to the Mansion, outbuildings, and historic landscape, it also features a Museum and Education Center, Orientation Center, Pioneer Farmer site, and reconstructed Gristmill and Distillery. The mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association is to preserve, restore and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations.

The internship position is a temporary position that will last for a total of 10 weeks. The intern is expected to work a standard 40-hour week and will receive compensation of $500 per week.  Accommodations and travel reimbursement are not included. Start date is flexible.

As employees of Mount Vernon, interns are required to adhere to Mount Vernon's Employee Handbook policies.

Qualifications
ˇ         BA in History of Decorative Arts, Art History, American History, American Studies, or Museum Studies required, with coursework in 18th and 19th century visual arts
ˇ         Computer skills required
ˇ         Experience or training in connoisseurship of fine and decorative arts or graphics preferred
ˇ         Experience in object cataloging procedures preferred
ˇ         Experience with digital photography and photo editing preferred
ˇ         Experience with collections databases, including The Museum System (TMS), as well as handling museum objects is preferred
ˇ         Intern should be able to work independently as well as a member of the Curatorial team
ˇ         Ability to complete a security background check

Curatorial Research Associate (Temporary, Part-Time)

Introduction
As part of Mount Vernon's ongoing efforts to improve digital access to its significant fine and decorative arts collections, the Historic Preservation and Collections Department seeks a part-time Curatorial Research Associate, focused on documentation of its fine arts collections (including paintings, miniatures, drawings, pastels, and sculpture).

Responsibilities
The Curatorial Research Associate will be responsible for documenting selected paintings, miniatures, drawings, pastels, period frames, and sculpture, per priorities established by the Curatorial staff.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
ˇ         object examination and measurements
ˇ         identification of subject, form, style, function, date, medium, artist/maker, place of origin
ˇ         condition assessment
ˇ         object and provenance research
ˇ         data entry into an online cataloging system (TMS)
ˇ         identification of items for which expert review is needed
ˇ         organization of relevant sections of object and research files.

The Curatorial Research Associate will work under the immediate supervision of the Associate Curator, and in collaboration with curatorial, collections management, conservation, and library staff as required.

The Curatorial Research Associate is a part-time, temporary position. The Research Associate is expected to work 25 hours per week at an hourly rate of $19.00. The position is funded for one year.

Qualifications
ˇ         MA in Art History, History of Decorative Arts, American Studies or related field required, with coursework in 18th and 19th century visual arts preferred
ˇ         Strong written communication and research skills required
ˇ         Computer skills required
ˇ         Ability to work independently as well as a member of the Curatorial team
ˇ         Flexibility, reliability, and close attention to detail required
ˇ         Experience or training in connoisseurship of fine and decorative arts and object handling and cataloguing procedures preferred
ˇ         Experience with collections databases, including The Museum System (TMS), as well as handling museum objects preferred
ˇ         Experience with digital photography of objects preferred
