CALL FOR PAPERS

41st Annual CAC Conference and Workshops

“Conserving the Past, Embracing the Future”

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

May 26-30, 2015

The Alberta Regional Group is delighted to host the 41st Annual Conference
and Workshop of the Canadian Association for Conservation of Cultural
Property - “Conserving the Past, Embracing the Future” - in Edmonton. The
conference will take place at the Art Gallery of Alberta from Thursday, May
28, to Saturday, May 30, 2015.

Alberta has a rich and complex record of human occupation extending back at
least 12,000 years. It is a young province and - amidst tremendous
technological developments - conservators immersed in the material culture
of the recent past have the opportunity to anticipate the collections of
the future. The CAC conference in Edmonton will embrace this duality in
formal sessions.

Papers and posters are invited for presentation on all aspects of
conservation, including:

- Aboriginal people’s material culture

- Archival records: traditional and digital

- Exhibits conservation: technical and practical

- Fine art and outdoor public art

- Industrial heritage and site restoration

- Military and settlement collections.

In addition, an IGNITE SESSION will be held to stimulate the exchange of
new and exciting ideas, experiences, issues and trends in a concise
presentation format. Each 5-minute Ignite talk will feature 20 slides that
advance automatically every 15 seconds. Emerging conservators are
particularly invited to present.

Two workshops will be held in conjunction with the Annual Conference in
Edmonton. The professional development focus will be on technical know-how
in service of conservation today.

3D SCANNING FOR CONSERVATORS will allow participants to explore the use of
3D scanning technology and rapid-prototyping solutions for condition
reporting, mount-making, object reproduction, and digitization of
collections. This workshop will take place in the sophisticated
laboratories and smart classrooms of the Northern Alberta Institute of
Technology Shell Manufacturing Centre on May 26th and 27th.

CONSERVATION OF AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTIONS will be hosted on May 27th by the
Provincial Archives of Alberta and include the use of their
state-of-the-art audiovisual laboratory. The workshop will include sessions
on the theory and practice of preparing audiovisual collections for
reformatting and/or digitization.
