As this is completely outside my field (and the web appears surprisingly
unhelpful for once...) I'm wondering if someone can point me in the right
direction.

I want to find more information about, if you like, the concept and history
of the Illustrata - Italia Illustrata, Germania Illustrata (planned but
never executed by Conrad Celtis?) etc (along with their more modern
versions).

I'm just looking for general history and descriptions as well as anything
along the lines of their place as a compendium of topographical description
and historical chronicle in the development of their cultures - I suppose
their human geography aspect - the idea of mapping, describing, documenting
(mythologizing?).

Anyway - I know there is a broad range of expertise on here - if anyone
actually knows anything about all this, maybe you could steer me to
something useful.

thanks
