DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES
Fashion Institute of Technology
New York, New York

Located in the heart of Manhattan on Seventh Avenue at 27th Street, the
Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) prides itself on being an educational
institution like no other. Founded in 1944, FIT is a college of art and
design and business and technology, of the State University of New York.
More than fifteen majors are offered through the School of Art and Design
and ten through the School of Business and Technology leading to A.A.S.,
B.F.A. and B.S. degrees. Master of Arts and Master of Professional Studies
degrees are offered through the School of Graduate Studies. It is FIT's
commitment to career-driven education and strong industry relationships,
however, that truly sets the school apart.

FIT is seeking a Dean of Graduate Studies to serve as the principal
administrator for the Department of Museum Studies and the Department of
Gallery and Retail Art Administration. The Dean reports to the Vice
President of Academic Affairs and is primarily responsible for the planning
and implementation of all aspects of graduate student recruitment, including
registration and admission efforts. Developing close working relationships
with museums, galleries, auction houses, the professional community of
curators, conservators, dealers, and scholars, is of paramount importance to
the success of the division. Encouraging excellence in teaching,
professional growth of faculty, and faculty participation in the growth of
the division, are also of critical importance. Providing leadership in
reaffirming the vision for the division, and planning for continued growth
and creative development consistent with the mission, values, policies, and
procedures of FIT, will be central to the Dean's success.

With a strong scholarly background and an appropriate terminal degree, the
successful candidate will possess substantial senior level administrative
experience in higher education, a museum, gallery, or art world institution,
or in fashion management. Experience in fund raising will be advantageous.
The successful candidate will possess a decisive leadership style with the
skill and motivation to work collaboratively and creatively with department
chairs and coordinators as well as other personnel in encouraging
development of curriculum. It is expected that the Dean will have sufficient
management experience to ensure that the departments and division are
managed effectively and efficiently.
