The Virginia Museum of Natural History is the official state repository of natural history specimens; current holdings include a total of several million specimens representing a wide range of disciplines and storage requirements: vertebrate and invertebrate biology (wet and dry), geology, invertebrate and vertebrate paleontology, and anthropology. Located in beautiful southern Virginia, VMNH is constructing a new 90,000 square foot purpose-built facility, which is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2006. More information about our institution and our new facility is available at www.vmnh.net.

If you meet the qualifications for Collections Manager, we invite you to apply to join VMNH at this exciting time.

As Collections Manager, you will be responsible for day-to-day management of the collections; overseeing environmental monitoring and pest management; catalog data entry/editing; and the supervision of the Registrar, the Librarian, and volunteer staff.

The position requires the ability to catalog a wide variety of natural history materials; experience in collections care and maintenance; attention to detail and accuracy; excellent written and verbal communications skills; excellent project management skills; and demonstrated proficiency with database software and Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of collections software including Re:Discovery and Specify would be an advantage.

A degree in biological or geological sciences and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies is preferred.

The Collections Manager will be heavily involved in assisting with the move of the collections to the new. The move is expected to take a minimum of two (2) years to accomplish.
