News from the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies:

The Smithsonian's Fellowships in Museum Practice (FMP) program announces the availability of funded study opportunities for scholars and practitioners to research and write manuscripts suitable for publication on issues of importance to the museum field.

The purpose of the program, now entering its tenth year, is to make information on current issues and public policies generated from both scholarly sources and reflexive practice available more broadly and in more useful formats. All topics of museum theory and operations are eligible for consideration. The long-term goal of the program is to foster innovative scholarship in the field that contributes to improvements in museum operations.

Recipients are selected on a competitive basis. The program is open to recipients of advanced degrees (conferred at least one year prior to FMP appointment) who would like to transform their thesis or dissertation into a publication; and to experienced museum personnel and subject specialists who have recently completed a major project and would like to investigate the topic from a broader perspective and share their findings with the profession.

Fellowships are awarded annually for a period of up to 6 months in duration. An award consists of a stipend of $3,000 per month plus round-trip travel expenses between the recipient's home and Washington, D.C., and research expenses of $1,000 for manuscript preparation. A fellow must reside in the Washington, D.C. area and work at the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) for the majority of the fellowship period. Residency periods are individually arranged to meet the work requirements of the fellow and the Smithsonian staff.

Proposals are due February 15. Awards are announced in the summer for fellowships beginning after October 15, 2002.
