Position: Laboratory Coordinator, Lubbock Lake

Accountability: This position reports to the Collections Manager
Description: The Laboratory Coordinator position
is an entry-level, professional, 5-year grant
funded position responsible for the daily
operations of the lab for the Lubbock Lake
Landmark regional research program. This
position involves working field season days and
hours, lab work (all phases of object, sample,
and documentation processing), database
management and bar coding, supervising the
laboratory crew, drafting lab policies and
procedures, status report writing
responsibilities, prioritizing laboratory
activities, budgetary estimates for time,
personnel, supplies, and equipment, maintenance
of lab equipment, interaction and cooperation
with the Field Manager and crew chiefs, lab crew
performance evaluations, participation in camp
set-up and break-down, KP responsibilities, and
all other duties as assigned by the Collections
Manager or the Director, Lubbock Lake Landmark.
Salary is $21,312/year plus full University
benefits. Earliest start date September 2007; position open until filled.
Duties and Responsibilities (including supervisory):
§ Supervise and participate in the processing of
Quaternary objects (archaeological,
paleontological, geological, botanical,
historic), samples, and documents through various
methods such as water screening sediments to
remove objects, cleaning objects with distilled
water, completing catalog records, labeling
objects, packaging objects, bar coding, data
entry, and using chemicals following strict protocols.
§ Work with employees and volunteers of various
experience levels, as well as interact with field crew personnel;
§ Supervise laboratory employees and volunteers.
Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate level of
physical activity. The employee must physically be able to:
§ Lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds;
§ Use chemicals needed to clean and label objects.
Qualifications:
§ Understanding of and ability to learn data
management software (currently FileMaker Pro), including bar coding;
§ Must be able to organize collections data and
people; prioritize collection and laboratory
activities; and budget and plan for supplies and equipment;
§ Ability to work well with others;
§ Ability to do precise work;
§ Strong work ethic and self-starter.
Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience
§ Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s
preferred: museum science/studies, anthropology, or related fields;
§ Two years experience in Quaternary sciences
laboratory procedures, including cataloging and inventory of objects;
§ Experience in archaeological field work and
familiarity with stratigraphic excavation procedures preferred.
