In our own Ozarks alphabetic coloring book we used "garden" for "G" to
discuss growing one's own food.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] "G" in pioneer life

We have a A-Z program for kindergarten, centered around an early pioneer,
Solomon Caswell (1796-1880), who came to Michigan in the 1820s. For every
letter of the alphabet, we show a different artifact (or repro) to teach
the children about his daily life. He was a farmer and cobbler. We hold
the program in his 1832 house, decorated to 1860s, in an open room that
just has a step-stove and a corner dishes cabinet.

Currently, we use fur for "F" (hunting), and a goosefeather for "G"
(writing). We've found that kids expect a feather to be another "F". We're
looking for a replacement "G" word.

"Gun" was mentioned, but we have some reservations about using guns with
that age. (We do show and talk about a gun during our log cabin 1st grade
program.)

Does anybody have any other "G" suggestions? Feel free to email me off
list.
