Matt,
My understanding is that by producing a Masters thesis, a person demonstrates that they have learned to conduct research in a specific discipline, so the answer would be YES, a Masters thesis would be an indication that the author knows how to do research. But, it does not necessarily indicate that the individual can conduct unsupervised or 'unguided' or original research; so, depending on the position, you probably wouldn't want your thesis to be your only research credential. The masters thesis is expected to demonstrate research skills, it isn't expected to generate original or new knowledge.

regards,
Elizabeth Clarke, PhD

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] research credentials

Is a hard bound thesis consider a research credential for history majors when entering the job market? Does employers seriously consider that when hiring their employees in a museum or somewhere else in the public history aspect of it? What are consider research credentials in order to become a more attractive hiring candidate?

Matt
