SOAKED: Disaster Response in the Murphy Art & Architecture Library
Tuesday, October 30 at 12:00 pm
Kansas Union, Jayhawk Room
The University of Kansas
1301 Jayhawk Boulevard
Lawrence, KS 66045

In the early morning of Wednesday, August 1, the hot summer drought caused a water main to break on the hill above the Spencer Museum of Art. Water flooded into the main level of the building, covering the floor, then pouring down the stairs, walls, and through the ceiling into the Murphy Art & Architecture Library. About 10% of the 170,000 volume collection was damaged.
The conservation team quickly enacted their disaster response plan and began assembling a team of volunteers and staff to save the library. They organized work crews and mobilized their manpower to load the books into a freeze unit to be sent for immediate treatment. Many staff members have been working continuously since then to revitalize the library.
At this Museum Studies Director's Forum, attendees will get an inside look at the salvage and recovery process from the flood that soaked the library. Those working on the front line from the beginning will share how they implemented their response plan, minimized damage, and successfully brought thousands of books back to the shelves of the library.
