Firstly, having the blanket in a zipped plastic bag is not good, because there is no air circulation present which could encourage condensation and mold growth. Secondly, the plastic, though taking thousands of years to degrade, do off gas and can damage the piece. Thirdly, having the blanket folded as he does is encouraging stress points to form and can eventually lead to failure and tearing at these points. I would recommend rolling the blanket using these steps:

  1. Having the owner wrap a sturdy cardboard tube with acid-free tissue, tucking the ends
into the ends of the tube.
  2. Cut another piece of tissue slightly short than the length of the tube adn roll this onto the
tube leabing the last 6-8" free. This will provide a cusion for the blanket
  3. Place one end of the blanket on the loose acid-free tissue; make sure the it is straight
       and free of creases.
  4. Begin rolling the tube, picking up the end of the blanket with the tissue. Make sure that
it rolls withouls creses and that it's straight as possible.
  5. Once completed, cover the rolled blanket with acid-free tissue paper and tie cotton twill
tape around the covering beyond the ends of the textile and around the middle of the
       blanket.

  Hope that helps.

On vacation in Florida, and BF just showed me his dad's wool blanket from more than 50 years ago he prizes very much. It appears to be very clean and in good condition, but it's the storage medium that set off alarms in my mind. He has it folded in a plastic zip bag from a major department store that another blanket may have come in. It's the plastic with no buffering tissue type paper that concerns me. Is the plastic safe, or is there a better method? Mounting is not an option. Many thanks.
