Environmental Monitoring and Control
June 5th - 8th
This course provides an in-depth study of the monitoring and control of variables (e.g., light, temperature, humidity, pollutants, pests, and vibration) in the museum environment, and an introduction to the effects of the museum environment on organic, inorganic, and mixed-composition artifacts.
Care of Paintings
June 11th-13th
In this course, the participant will learn the structure of easel paintings; causes of deterioration; examination methodologies; identification of damage; condition reporting and
documentation strategies; and the standards for storing, handling, displaying/installing, and
transporting paintings.
Design and Construction of Mounts for Exhibits
June 11th-14th
This course covers both theory and hands-on practice of mount making for museum objects.
Topics include the designing and fabrication of mounts to protect, support, secure, and exhibit a variety of museum objects and various techniques for using archival materials for
mount making. Practicum includes the use of metals, acrylics, and ethafoam in making
mounts.
Writing Interpretative Exhibit Labels
June 15-16
Lecture, practicum, and case study discussion will cover the following topics: planning, developing the "big idea" for the exhibit, developing a "voice" for the labels, writing the label,
editing the label, label copy review, the basics of good typography and label design, problem
solving difficult label issues, and evaluation of label copy.
Introduction to Exhibition Lighting
June 18-20
This course will provide a basic overview of the theory and practice of lighting design. The goal of this course is for the participant to become functionally familiar with the main parameters of exhibition lighting. This will be done through lecture, discussion, and practicum activities.
Preservation of Archives
June 18-21
The goal of this course is to provide the participant with a foundation for making long-term preservation decisions about archival holdings. The emphasis is on practical , preventive,
and cost-effective methodologies for archival preservation.
Care of Leather and Fur
June 25-28
This course focuses on the proper methods of care, handling, storing, and displaying leather and fur. Participants will be introduced to methods of cleaning, repairing, reshaping, examination, documentation, inherent preservation issues with leather and fur, and effective methods of mitigation of preservation issues.
Inorganic and Organic Materials: Examination and Documentation
June 21-23 and 25-27
This course provides detailed information about the physical/chemical composition and construction/fabrication of artifacts made of different types of materials. Other topics addressed in this course are identification of specific artifact material, examination and
documentation of artifact condition, and factors affecting the preservation of materials.
