The GRE CD-ROMS are very helpful. I also used math CD-ROMS, which really
improved my GRE score.

I have one tidbit to add in terms of GRE prep. In addition to books, there
are also CD-ROMS that are study guides for the GRE. They have tips,
exercises, and lots of practice tests. I used one (by Kaplan, I think), and
since I believe all the tests are now given on computers (no more pencil and
paper), I personally found this very helpful. Mine gave me scores on the
practice tests, let me go back and see which questions I got wrong, and just
generally familiarized me with the computer test's format, commands,
buttons, etc.

In terms of the GRE, buy some books and study them--there are plenty out
there. The GRE is a completely study-able test; you will do much better if
you prepare for it and practice it.

As for applications in general, work on your essay to make it
focused--here's what I've done in the past, here's what I've been doing
now, here's what I want to do, and here's why your program specifically is
the best place to build on my past experiences and prepare for my new
goals. And--this will seem very obvious--proofread EVERYTHING. Graduate
school is competitive, and professionalism and focus count.

Good luck!
