Museum Workshop Announcement

Integrated Pest Management for Museums
August 15, 2011

This practical one day session will show how to make an IPM program work regardless of what sized institution and budget you have to deal with. Learn how to best put together an IPM team or what it takes to train yourself if you have no help. Learn the "Gatekeeper" strategy to keep pests from entering your institution in the first place. Also learn how to monitor and inspect, in order to isolate pest problems before they get out of hand. Treatment options will be discussed with an emphasis on refraining from chemical use while protecting the staff and the collection. This includes anoxic treatments and cold temperature treatments.

Hands-on activities will include a detailed museum pest identification segment followed by a quiz using real museum insects and hand lenses, as well as by a group session where each group is given a real life infestation scenario where they have to come up with the culprit and report back to the entire group what they found.

Instructor:
Patrick J. Kelley is currently Vice President of Insects Limited, Inc. He has given lectures and workshops for several museum organizations including, American Association of Museums, Association of Midwest Museums, Association of Indiana Museums, Association of Indiana Archivists, Southeast Regional Conservation Association and most recently the Meeting on Cultural Heritage Pests in Piacenza, Italy in June, 2011.
