There is an old fort on an island in the Dry Tortugas (islands off
Florida) called, I believe, Fort Jefferson. The fort takes up basically
the whole little island. The only way to get there is by boat or
sea plane. The fort was turned into a prison and was a pretty grim
place. This is where Dr. Mudd, who set John Wilkes Booth's leg after
Booth assassinated President Lincoln, was incarcerated. The fort is
open to the public as a park run by the US National Park Service.
You can go out there and take a self-guided tour of the fort/prison (there
are various explanatory panels around the fort.) It is quite an eerie
place.
