Your are taking on an important task which has often confounded a lot of
concerned, experienced museum professionals. It is especially important to see
what can be done about diversity at the training level.
Two sources to try for advice: Contact Montrose Cones at the the Smithsonian
Office of Personnel, who is wise and sauvy on this subject. Also, contact the
AAM Museum Management Committee, which has an active sub-group devoted to
human resource issues, many of whose members have a special concern for
questions of (and strategies for) inclusive employment. I'm sorry, I do not
know who the current committee chair is, but AAM has a staff liason who could
tell you. Finally, if you haven't seen it, track down a copy of the AAM TIS
report "Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Staff," which grew out of a fine
professional education seminar they did c. 1993 or 1994.
Please share your ideas here when you have gathered and developed suggestions.
Best of luck.
