The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is seeking a Project Manager to support the Bloomington campus's activities in response to regulatory changes in the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).  The Bloomington campus currently has in its possession the remains of approximately 7,500 individuals some of which are classified under NAGPRA as culturally unidentifiable.

Major areas of responsibility include:  manage curation and preservation of NAGPRA Collection; assess the need for policy at IU Bloomington and advise on policy refinement; interact closely with staff in the Mathers Museum/Glenn Black Lab, the Department of Anthropology, and other IUB units in regards to human remains; establish and maintain relationships with the tribal communities and initiate processes that will potentially lead to repatriation of human remains; consult, as appropriate, the National NAGPRA office regarding implementation of NAGPRA; serve as the "Institutional" point of contact for all inquiries seeking information about Native American human remains and objects falling under NAGPRA; and oversee disposition of culturally unidentifiable remains and objects, or repatriation of culturally identifiable remains and objects.  Additionally the incumbent will gather and consolidate campus-held information regarding NAGPRA-relevant archaeological sites, and revise the current catalog and the process for cataloging human remains and associated objects to assure compliance with national regulations and standards.

Applicants must have a master's degree, Ph.D. preferred, with 3-4 years of progressive administrative experience; must have knowledge of NAGPRA (experience with NAGPRA is preferred) and experience implementing regulations; should have reasonable knowledge of relevant North American history and prehistory, including archaeological theory and method and the history of the relationship between Indian tribes and colonization of North America; should have reasonable knowledge of the relationship of federally-recognized tribes with state and federal governments.

This position reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Research in the Humanities and the Arts, and the Assistant Vice President for Research Compliance.
