John, You shouldn't be embarrassed.  I moderate a railroad preservation list (www.rypn.org) and receive over 100 spam requests to register as (false) users each day... 

 

The fact is that there is a large population who believe that they can support themselves by internet scams and unauthorized advertising.

 

On our site we have had a hard time balancing between keeping the list spam free and blocking legitimate users.  We seem to be better at blocking that allowing.

I apologize to the list for the accidental approval of some spam e-mail. With the self-moderated list I see about 60-100 pieces of spam e-mail per day on the web interface for managing the list. I need to clear the spam out so I can approve legitimate e-mail. Unfortunately, the design of the page is such that sometimes spam gets approved instead of rejected.
