Morning Kris!
I agree with Cindy that in not having any personal experience to pull upon, I have little to contribute in that regard, however, I would suggest that if it is decided to establish a collection (which I do think is a grand idea), I do think some plaque or whatnot needs to be placed at the site mentioning the collection and that any items left are being removed in order to find a permanent home within this collection and not simply tossed in the trash. It could potentially mention what might be accepted into the collection (ie, the flag, medal, beer, etc.) and what will be done with other items (flowers), whether or not they will be disposed of, or potentially dried and utilized in memorial artwork by a local artist, etc...

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] posting for listserv

Our community just dedicated a Veteran's Freedom Park<http://www.townofcary.org/Departments/fdts/facilities/Current_Projects/veteransfreedompark.htm> over Memorial Day weekend. In addition to flowers, notes and other small items, someone left a purple heart and there is folded American flag and couple of cans of beer which we have been advised maybe token from Vietnam War veterans. This may or may not be an issue but we need to decide a clear direction on what to do with what people leave at the park. The site is not staffed and will require additional staff time to monitor.

Questions we are pondering include:

* Should we create a historical collection of some of the items left? And if so what should we keep?

* What should be left and or removed?

* How long do we leave things at the site?

Do any of you have a similar situation and if so how have you handled it?
Any feedback will be much appreciated.
