Another Museum that chose to interpret multiple time periods during the houses use is the Tenement Museum in New York City http://www.tenement.org/.  I have not been to the museum, it is on my list of places to visit, but I saw a presentation by the curator.  It is possible to interpret multiple time periods, but it needs clear planning and clear transitions so that the visitor is not confused.  I am sure after all these emails that you are planning to create a furnishing plan or an interpretive plan so you could work out transitions within the plan.  Good luck!
