Take a look at Conserve-o-gram 18/2 at
http://www.cr.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/18-02.pdf "Safe
Plastics and Fabrics for Exhibit and Storage." PVC releases some nasty
chemicals as it ages, and I am not aware of any way to prevent it or block
the gasses from escaping.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] PVC pipe & light levels
What's the latest thinking on the use of PVC pipe for use with museum
textile collections? Are they safe to use or do they off-gas too much bad
stuff? Is there a way to seal them so that they live up to curatorial
standards?
Also, what is the acceptable light level for exhibiting modern textiles -
cotton and leather?
Thanks,
Robin
