Good Afternoon Megan,
The Pink Palace Museum has two annual Holiday (read: Christmas) Season exhibits called the Festival of Trees (artificial trees decorated by various community volunteer organizations and each tree is sponsored by various corporations and donors) and the Enchanted Forest (a restored 1960s department store electrical/mechanical tableaux of Santa’s workshop, igloos with penguins (don’t let facts in the way), cute animals moving/playing in the artificial snow, etc……with a live Santa, photo opportunities, Gingerbread (sprayed with Krylon) Village competition, and a model train layout)…..there are dozens of artificial trees, all the same uniform size…..not one tree is real, heck the only thing that is real is Santa…..for over a decade, not one complaint about using artificial trees.

Megan,
If I recall correctly, your exhibit space is somewhat unique in that the collection is extremely varied and focuses on the interactive, is that correct? What if you asked the donor to set up the live tree outside, and also provide a synthetic tree inside, and then offer visitors a decorating activity? Decorate the tree outside with bird-feeder type decorations (popcorn strings, pinecone/bird seed feeders, etc.) and a more traditional ornament craft for the inside tree, with ornaments inspired by your collection.
That would be my response to the donor, using the reasoning of avoiding pests/chemicals in your exhibit space.

As I conservator I agree with all of my colleagues who said that it wasn't a good idea. There are plenty of synthetic trees that can be used instead of a live one.
If you wish to use a live tree do not put it in a gallery with art or historic objects. A more appropriate place would be outdoors near the entrance or on a patio. The only possible place indoors would be a food cafe or restaurant which should be a zone that is isolated from the collections anyway because of issues of pests, odors, and noise.
