In the years I've been a member of the Museums list,
there have been countless tails of frustrated
erstwhile museums professionals. These are people who
have worked hard and incurred significant debt to get
a college education they could use as the key to
opening the door to a museum career, but they have
been disappointed because the amount of education
required isn't always commensurate with the pay AND
they have significant debt to pay off.

I've been trying to offer what I can to help folks
find employment or at least opportunities that can
give you transferrable skills you can use toward
employment.

I've just stumbled onto something else, and I think it
may be a good match for some of you.

In my daily search for employment, I was on
http://careers.yahoo.com and put in a query across the
US using the term "grant." Now I will tell you that I
often come up with mismatches on the Yahoo searches
(but there's enough of value not to discount the
process entirely). When I searched for grants a SLEW
of jobs came open, in a myriad of locales for a job
title of Teach for America Corps Member.

While it's not a job for which I have an interest, I
did find some magic keywords that could be of help to
MANY of you if you wish to apply and can qualify. The
job would require you to teach for two years. It
would pay a fairly decent salary during that time, AND
it would also include almost $10,000 in college loan
foregiveness among other perks. You would, in effect,
be forestalling your musuems quest while working off
some of your debt and getting a decent salary. You
could augment that with some volunteerism at one or
more of your local museums AND, perhaps--just
perhaps--you could open the mines of many
impressionable young people to the value that lies in
museums.

I'm taking the liberty of copying the text of one of
the jobs (there are many, so I'm asking you to do your
own search on the term "Teach for America" at
http://careeers.yahoo.com) so that you can see where
this MIGHT be a win for you:
