A good question and something I was uncomfortable with, especially at AGMs
when staff (5) frequently outnumbered members and were necessary to ensure
there was a quorum. My issue with staff being members was a perception of
conflict of interest when voting on motions, not that it ever happened. I
felt that the subject of staff membership and voting privileges should be
set out in the by-laws of the society. If a motion that affected the
workplace was made, staff would be expected to abstain as they have a
personal interest in the outcome.
