Greetings:
    Chances are that your metal marker is cast iron of one type or another,
if ferrous metal (if it rusts, it's ferrous) or brass or bronze if
non-ferrous. The easiest way to determine the metal type is to use a magnet,
if it sticks it's ferrous, if not it's non-ferrous. The iron can be welded or
brazed with proper flux, if welded, make sure the welder is using the proper
filler rod, usually a nickle/iron alloy referred to as ni-rod. A frame can be
made but I would not suggest it as water entry would continue to corrode
around breaks. Find the best skilled welder with experience in cast iron you
can, and you will have the best result. Contact farm machinery sales or heavy
equiptment sales to recomend a local tradesman that specializes in welding
cast iron. The brass or bronze should be repaired by brazing with a lower
temperature filler material like nickle-silver. The same search for a
tradesman applies, ask for a talented "torch man" you'd be in great shape if
you could contact a foundry.
