Maureen,

Are you completely overlooking the NUMBER ONE - greatest invention of your generation - "Facebook?" In my community (200,000) people we have a VERY active facebook "community" (I'd say there is a core of a couple hundreed of us). The secret will be trying to find and tap into that community. Get on Facbook, and start searching for local business, newspapers and media outlets, museums and other community organizations.... The list is endless. Sometimes municipalities will even have facebook sites. Once you identify where people (your audience) hangs-out and participates, briefly explain your project and ask about posting a link (it's always nice to ask first).

For my master's thesis I did a ten-question survey (before the advent of online "Survey Monkey" websites) and I did as you are -- search for, and hit up other local bloggers, news discussion forums and the like.

Good luck in your project.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Where can I survey?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a Master of Arts Management student at Carnegie Mellon University,

and I'm working on a marketing project for a cartoon/comic art museum

known as the ToonSeum in Downtown Pittsburgh. Trouble is, I'm trying

to survey a wide range of individuals around the Southwestern PA

region, but struggling to get a full range of responses. So far, we've

traded lists with other museums in Pittsburgh, and I've reached out to

our small community of bloggers. However, I want to reach more people

outside of Pittsburgh. Does anyone have suggestions on places to

blast a survey that does not require purchasing a mailing list?

Thanks in advance!

Maureen Logan

P.S. If you are affiliated with the 'Burgh in anyway, feel free to

fill out the survey yourself! :-)
