As an Australian who lived in Northern Virginia back in t he
early/mid 80s I must admit (and whose son was born in the Columbia
Hospital for Womn), I second Celia's recommendations for the Hillwood
Museum and the Phillips Collection. I also second the recommendation
for the Library of Congress. The Smithsonian museums are, of course,
taken as read. You could also, if you wanted to, take a day trip to
Harper's Ferry (of John Brown fame), not to mention all the other
wonderful places in the vicinity of DC. My feeling is that cities are
great but it is always nice to get out into the hinterland.
