We have an excellent relationship with re-enactors, and have two events
a year here at Locust Grove, in Louisville, Kentucky - the spring
Encampment and fall Market Days event (with sutlers). We don't pay the
re-enactors anything. The re-enactors, who are from local Revolutionary
War regiments including the Illinois Regiment of Virginia, camp here for
the weekend. We feel privileged to have them, and they are glad to be
here.

We see them as an important part of our educational mission, not just as
free labor or an attraction for tourists. Locust Grove is one of very
few Revolutionary War-associated sites on this side of the Appalachians
- it was the final home of George Rogers Clark, who is the patron saint
of Ohio Valley Revolutionary War enthusiasts, so that helps. The degree
of care and research that the Illinois Regiment puts into its
presentations is exemplary, and gives us a chance to offer high-quality
living history programs that we otherwise can rarely do.

So, make friends with your local re-enactors, and good things can
happen!

Carol Ely
Executive Director
Historic Locust Grove
