I posed the laser pointer question to the Conservators DistList and was
referred to the following URL:
http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/ (search for laser
pointers). Although there are doubts that keep the conservators from
endorsing the use of laser pointers, they could measure no discernable
degradation in their tests. It seems that it may be the safest solution
currently available for directing audience attention. (I use a laser pointer
fairly regularly with a slide presentation and I have found it difficult to
direct the beam at any single point for very long.)
