Glyn,
Having just deaccessed several items from our collection just yesterday, I
feel I can give you some input. At The Louisville Science Center, our
deaccession policy requires that the collection department meet to agree upon
the items suggested for deaccession; we fill out paperwork describing each
item and the reason it is no longer wanted; the items are presented to the
board exhibits and collections subcommittee who then vote on deaccessioning;
and finally, the items are either destroyed or donated (we are not allowed to
sell items and profit from our donations).

Hope that helps,

Amy Miller
