Candace,

Impossible to say without seeing them, but they may be for hair weaving. Just a thought.

Cheers,

here's a museum which has a special interest in the technique:

"...Rough Hands, Delicate Silk – Silk-Ribbon Weaving around Basel is the name of our new permanent exhibit at the Therwil farmhouse. There is no better way to learn about silk-ribbon weaving from the 16th century, through industrialization, to its decline...."

found by a web search using the terms

silk ribbon weaving museum

Other articles seem to indicate that the technique either is done without tools or with ordinary embroidery tools.

Large pieces are made in factories and looms, but you are asking about hand methods.

I'd be happy to search for info about the tolls you have if you could send jpg.

Just because I like to search and also have experimented with many embroidery techniques.

Best wishes, Barbara, retired librarian

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] silk ribbon weaving tools

Has anyone encountered a set of hand tools used for silk ribbon weaving, around the turn of the 20th century? We have a set of mysterious tools here that are probably somewhat similar to those for lace making, but I don’t know. Anyone know anything about it?

Thanks,

Candace Perry
