Sarah,

Absolutely there is no harm in such a thing. It is quite a good idea.
Sometimes institutions are thinking of offering positions, or just not
quite ready to advertise them. I can not hurt to get your name out there,
and to let them know you are specifically interested in working with them.
Make sure you personalize such advances, and let them know why you are
interested in their institution. Margo is right, positions are often
created for people who demonstrate enough interest and drive to work in a
certain place or do certain jobs.

The worst response you will get is a no thankyou, but you may also get a
very positive response.

Good luck.

One question I have, is there any benefit/harm in submitting a resume to a
museum when they are not they are looking to hire someone at that time?
I've been out of school for a few months now, and at this point I am
looking to find a job to pay the bills while I look for something in the
field.

Would it be beneficial to send out resumes this way? Or would it be better
to only send them when a job is announced?

Thanks
Sarah
