SPNHC 2000 - Halifax, Nova Scotia
July 10-14, 2000
The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) is
having its 15th annual conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from July
10-14, 2000. This meeting is being co-hosted by the Geological Survey of
Canada (GSC) and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. The theme for
this year's meeting is " Maritime Natural History" which is very
appropriate to be celebrating in historic Halifax founded in 1749, by
Edward Cornwallis. An epicenter of entertainment, there's a fusion of old
history and eclectic lifestyle to be enjoyed by all. Program highlights
include preconference field trips such as whale watching at Brier island,
minivan tours to historic Annapolis Valley home of the Acadian dykes, south
shore historic Peggy's Cove, as well as world renown fossil site at Joggins
in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. A one-day post-conference permits workshop
entitled " Across Borders" will end the conference on 14th July 2000. The
keynote address will be provided by Steve Blasco on exploring the wreck of
the famous Titanic. Special paper sessions include maritime heritage,
general session, maritime environment/marine mammals and invertebrates,
paleolithic maritime cultures and finally land sea interaction to be held
at the world famous Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). See http://
nature.ednet.ns.ca/nature/SPNHC2000/ for details.
