Perhaps you should think about why you want to clean it. To make it look new? It acquired those stains during its life, so they are part of it now. A lot of what museums display has stains and discolorations - also cracks, tears, losses, etc.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Cleaning light wood?
Dear Museum professionals,
The Shell Museum on Sanibel, Florida, will soon be installing a new permanent exhibition on cowry shells. Included in the exhibit is an 18'' New Guinean figurine carved from light wood (and whose eyes are cowry shells.) The object has light stain marks and some light surface discoloration.
I thought about using some type of wood cleaning fluid and/or oil to help remove these flaws, but I do worry about potential preservation artifacts / long term negative effects arising from using such products. Any suggestions / recommendations?
