The New England Folklife Center in Lowell, Massachusetts is a noncollecting
organization which mounts exhibitions in its gallery space.  The gallery
space is alternately used for performances, town meetings, and various
education events.  I co-developed a recent exhibition for the Folklife
Center with Lowell National Historical Park.  To a certain extent we relied
on objects within the Park collection.  In these instances I brought to the
selection process the interpretive bent of the Folklife Center.  However,
most objects exhibited were sought, then borrowed specifically for the
project from the larger community.  In this way, the Folklife Center adopted
the model of community forum.
