I think you bring up some good points - and recently, I discussed the
differnent ideas about posting basic, general information on a web front
page - as opposed to somewhere else on a large Museum web site.

The Mariners' Museum places their basic information in a section, listed on
the front page (and every other page via button bar) called GENERAL
INFORMATION - and includes two large printable maps of how to get to the
Museum, listing hours, prices, nearby attractions, email links, fax numbers
etc.

Interesting, but a recent email to the webmaster asked this same question -
why the address and phone was not on the front page. I have always thought
of a front page to a large site shuld offer some standard type of
navigation, and choose design elements which make it easy to use. Then
visitors will be able to navigate the entire site, instead of just being to
rely upon the page for basic telephone directory information.

In other words, I compare it to allowing the user to utilize the entire site
instead of simply promoting the most important 2-4 items on the front page.
Teaching a person to fish, it much more useful in the long term than feeding
them for a day.
