SHORT BITES:
@@Janet Mitchell, RCA died of cancer at the age of 85. According to
Margaret Paulson, author of a book about Mitchell, she painted in two
distinct styles. "On the one hand, she was an artists 'anchored in the
prairies' who produced highly realistic landscapes and townscapes of Western
Canada….on the other hand, she created whimsical, sometimes dreamlike images
in vibrant colors of cats, dogs, birds or fanciful floating people."
Mitchell participated in the Allied Arts Centre in Coste House (1940s), was
a member of the Calgary Sketch Club (from 1936), received a Doctor of Laws
honorary degree from the University of Calgary, and recently donated all her
art supplies to the Alberta College of Art and Design for its fundraising
auction. Her work is in the collections of National Gallery of Canada,
Glenbow and Alberta Foundation for the Arts, to name a few. See Paulson,
