Hello List Members,
As you plan your visit to the CMA Conference "Beyond Change: Creating
New Futures" in Vancouver, June 15-18, consider a visit to near-by
Victoria! We are offering two training workshops - one preceeding and
one following CMA. They are:
"Communities & Museums", June 12-14 with Greg Baeker
"Curatorship: Indigenous Perspectives", June 20-28 with Gerald McMaster
Brief course descriptions follow - I will post more detailed information
in the next couple of weeks. Hope to have some of you over to the
Island!
Communities and Museums

Museums are experiencing profound shifts in their relationships with
communities as public funding diminishes and diverse interest groups
seek greater involvement in the preservation of their cultural heritage.
This workshop examines the complex factors that are reshaping the ways
in which communities and museums interact, and provides you with
strategies for building meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships.
Instructor: Greg Baeker is a specialist in community cultural planning

Indigenous peoples across Canada - and around the world - are reclaiming
control of their cultural heritage. This course examines the indigenous
perspectives which are reshaping conventional curatorial practices and
looks at emerging forms of cultural stewardship. Topics include:
- collecting practices and their influence on existing collections
- representation: past and present
- cultural politics
- aboriginal perspectives/aboriginal museums and cultural centres
- issues and problems of acquisitions
- issues of access and ownership
- collections care, handling, and use
Instructor: Gerald McMaster is Curator of Contemporary Indian Art at the
Canadian Museum of Civilization
Dates: June 20-28
Please register by: May 24 (credit, non-credit, transfer credit options
available)
Fee: $589 Canadian
Accommodation - On-campus accommodation available at $60/night(B&B) and
$25-32/night (residence). Program staff can advise of off-campus
alternatives.
