Mystic Seaport - The Museum of America and the Sea
announces a
*Summer Interpretation Residency*
June 20 - August 23, 1996
The Interpretation Division of Mystic Seaport is offering a unique
opportunity this summer for an internship focused on interpretation at the
nation's foremost maritime history museum.
Mystic Seaport - "The Museum of America and the Sea," is an outdoor museum
on 17 waterfront acres on the Mystic River in Connecticut. A strong
interpretive program brings to life our impressive collection of ships,
buildings, small craft, tools, documents, and other objects. Summer
residents will participate in many aspects of this program.
After eight days of intensive training, residents will work as interpreters
in skills oriented exhibits or in the museum's theater group. Skills may
include maritime skills - such as setting and furling sail on the vessels -
or smithing, coopering, printing, open-hearth cooking, or acting. In
addition, one day each week will be directed to the study of Interpretation
or field trips. Workshops will include historic methodology, oral history,
exhibitions, and curatorial considerations. Field trips will be to
exemplary interpretive programs in New England .
Housing on the Seaport grounds and a Stipend of $500 will be provided for
each participant.
Openings are available for 8 residents who have completed at least two
years of college training. No prior specific skills experience is
necessary, however some skills have specific physical requirements.
Applications (including transcripts and letters of recommendation) must be
completed by March 15. Interviews will be required; phone interviews are
acceptable if necessary. E-mail to the address below for application
