Has anyone experienced or encountered information on the impacts
(positive or negative) of nearby gambling casinos on museums? The
Canadian Museum of Civilization is about to experience a new casino
neighbor that will, if it follows the general model, generate 2 to 4
million visits annually along with very significant economic impact
by individuals, family groups, and tour groups. My initial thinking
suggests relatively little correspondence between casino patrons and
museum visitors but the demographics of the two groups are
surprisingly similar. Furthermore, that many people and that much
spending power nearby is bound to have an effect on the museum's
physical environment as well as on the tourism infrastructure
(transport, restaurants, hotels, etc.) that presently supports the
one and one-half million museum visits each year.
Please respond directly to me by e-mail or, if you think the
information is of more general interest, here on Museum-L.
Thanks, Bob Kelly
