In attempting to compile a comprehensive listing/survey of 19th

and 20th American maritime photographers, I am contacting you in hopes of

assistance with this project. For the last two years I have been

gathering biographical data of photographers that were influenced

by the seas, and documented maritime activities and subject matter.

The list currently contains 213 names, life-dates, active dates,

geographical locations, subjects and sometimes extensive

biographical information on the photographer/artist.

This area of interest includes photographers that documented

the largest ocean steamships to the smallest of water-craft,

harbor and port scenes, interiors and deck scenes, documentation

of fishing activities and recreational boating, seascapes, water

studies, social and ethnohistory.I have included photographers

such as for example Bernice Abbott, Wynn Bullock, Harry Callahan,

Edward Curtis, Kirby Kean, Alfred Steiglitz, Ralph Steiner and

Hiroshi Sugimoto because of the influence of this particular

subject on their artistic vision.

I am hoping to produce a publication with this biographical

information along with sample photographs of the

photographer's/artist's work. Thank you for your assistance

with this project. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Thomas Moore
