Hi Christian,

I realize that you are dealing with a very precious, possibly fragile,
cassette tape and I wouldn't recommend this solution in your instance or
in any cases where the medium might be at risk of destruction, but I
thought I'd pass along another possibility to the rest of the list in
case they are looking to digitize audio, in house, and for minimal
cost.If you can play back your audio through a headphone jack, you can
record it to a PC (probably a Mac too, but we use PC). All you need is
some software and a $6 dollar cable with a 1/8" TRS stereo plug
(standard headphone plug) on each end.

We have a collection of oral history and language translations from the
80's and 90's that we've been digitizing. Luckily we have the original
reel-to-reel recordings, as well as 1 or 2 backup copies of each
recording. Anyway, you can download a free program called Audacity
(http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) that allows you to record sound to
your hard drive through your computer's sound card. You can then clean
up, adjust levels, edit and then convert the sound files to MP3 and
WAV. You can also convert those files into a number of other formats
using a variety of free conversion tools.
