Amber;

The website Andrew recommends is an excellent resource; I spent a lot
of time going through the reviews there before making our decision to
purchase a camera last year, for much the same reasons you're in the
market for one.

Our previous camera was a Sony Mavica--I didn't even consider looking
for a newer model. The mini-CDs they required take up lot of memory
space; even if you "delete" and image, the space has still be written
to, and will be lost to you. Of course, this was with an older (at
least 5 years) Mavica; things may have improved, or there may be CD-Rs
available for them now. I was for a time looking at another Sony
product, but advice I received was that I should be looking to buy from
a camera manufacturer (Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc), rather than an
electronics manufacturer--they've been in the business longer, and know
what a serious photographer will want.

My search came down to a choice between the Nikon D-70 and the Canon
Digital Rebel; I'm sure you'll find either an excellent choice. We went
for the Nikon D-70 because, being in a smaller centre, we had a local
supplier for it in case we needed servicing. It might be a bit pricier
than what you're looking for, but then, I understand a new version (the
D-70S) is just coming out, so you may be able to get a D-70 at a good
price.

Cheers,

Amber,

I recommend visiting http://www.dpreview.com

The site has excellent reviews of current cameras, and is very good at

providing comparison information. I can't imagine buying a digital
camera
without consulting it first. Especially helpful (to me, a digital
photography novice) is the glossary of terms.

Happy Hunting.
