Another reason for the larger amount of women in the museum field may be
economic - until fairly recently (relatively speaking) it was uncommon for a
woman to be the main provider in a family. Museum's traditionally lower
salaries, at the lower levels, would have been enough to support a single
person or make a nice contribution to a family's income, but likely not
enough to be the sole income for an entire family.

Just a thought, and yet another broad generalization.
